It has historical origins in the Academia Sinica during the Republican era and formerly also known by that name, is the national academy for the natural sciences of the People's Republic of China (PRC). Collectively known as the "Two Academies (两院)" along with the Chinese Academy of Engineering, it functions as the national scientific think tank and academic governing body, providing advisory and appraisal services on issues stemming from the national economy, social development, and science and technology progress. It is headquartered in Xicheng District, Beijing, with branch institutes all over mainland China. It has also created hundreds of commercial enterprises, Lenovo being one of the most famous.

Researchers Realize Rapid Nitriding of Stainless Steel Surface

“A research group led by NI Guohua from the Institute of Plasma Physics, Hefei Institutes of Physical Science realized the rapid nitriding of stainless steel surface and moreover they revealed the mechanism of non-thermal arc plasma nitriding at atmospheric pressure …

Massive Neutron Star Has a Strange Heart

“At the end of a star’s life, nuclear fusion ceases, and the resulting pressure is no longer sufficient to counteract the gravitational force. This collapse can lead to the formation of neutron stars, which are composed of the densest …

Researchers Discover Twisted Fields Around Mysterious Fast Radio Burst

“Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are the brightest millisecond-duration cosmic explosions in radio bands. Their unknown origin poses challenges for astronomy as well as physics. The Commensal Radio Astronomy FAST Survey (CRAFTS), a key program of the Five-hundred-meter Spherical radio Telescope …

3D-printed Polymer Substrate Coated with Photocatalytic Film Developed for Efficient Water Purification

“A research team led by Prof. ZHANG Dun from the Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS) has developed a novel in-situ growing bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) film on 3D-printed polymer substrate through successive ion layer adsorption reaction …

China’s FAST Telescope Detects More Than 740 Pulsars

“Scientists have identified over 740 pulsars since October 2017 with the help of the 500-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST), also dubbed as the “China Sky Eye.” Jiang Peng, chief engineer of FAST and researcher at the National Astronomical Observatories …

Tuning Local Coordination of Catalysts for Better Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

“A research team led by Prof. ZHU Qingshan from the Institute of Process Engineering (IPE) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences investigated the electronic structure transition from NiAs- to MnP- type CoPxS1-x compounds and how the transition influences catalytic activity …

New Strategy Proposed for Ultra-long Cycle Lithium-ion Battery

“In recent years, lithium-ion batteries have been widely used in many fields. Compared with traditional lithium ion battery cathode materials, more lithium ions in lithium-rich manganese-based cathode materials of unit mass participate in energy storage. However, in the process of …

Researchers Create Ultracold Triatomic Gas of High Phase-space Density

“Recently, a research team led by Prof. PAN Jianwei and Prof. ZHAO Bo from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), used adiabatic magneto-association to create ultracold gas of triatomic molecules …

China Launches Experimental Satellite into Space

“China launched a Long March 2D carrier rocket on Saturday morning to transport an experimental satellite into space, according to China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp. The State-owned space conglomerate said in a press release that the rocket blasted off …

Physicists Discover New Isotope Actinium-204

“A research team at the Institute of Modern Physics (IMP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), together with their collaborators, has recently synthesized a new isotope, actinium-204, which is the lightest actinium isotope so far discovered and the fourth …
