Umass Amherst Researchers Invent “Electronic Nose” Built With Sustainably Sourced Microbial Nanowires That Could Revolutionize Health Monitoring

“Scientists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst recently announced the invention of a nanowire 10,000 times thinner than a human hair that can be cheaply grown by common bacteria and tuned to “smell” a vast array of chemical tracers …

Next-generation wireless technology may leverage on the human body for energy

“While you may be just starting to reap the advantages of 5G wireless technology, researchers throughout the world are already working hard on the future: 6G. One of the most promising breakthroughs in 6G telecommunications is the possibility of Visible …

Researchers 3D print first high-performance nanostructured alloy that’s both ultrastrong and ductile

“Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and the Georgia Institute of Technology has 3D printed a dual-phase, nanostructured high-entropy alloy that exceeds the strength and ductility of other state-of-the-art additively manufactured materials, which could lead to higher-performance components for …

The bacteria powering a truly green revolution in personal electronics

“Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst recently announced that they have figured out how to engineer a biofilm that harvests the energy in evaporation and converts it to electricity. This biofilm, which was announced in Nature Communications, has the …

Scientists At Umass Amherst Engineer New Material That Can Absorb And Release Enormous Amounts Of Energy

“A team of researchers from the University of Massachusetts Amherst recently announced in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that they had engineered a new rubber-like solid substance that has surprising qualities. It can absorb and release very …

UMass Amherst Team Helps Demonstrate Spontaneous Quantum Error Correction

“New research tackles a central challenge of powerful quantum computing To build a universal quantum computer from fragile quantum components, effective implementation of quantum error correction (QEC) is an essential requirement and a central challenge. QEC is used in quantum …

UMass Amherst Scientists Invent New Sensing Eye Mask

“Wearable soft mask will be useful for new, cutting-edge sleep and psycho-social studies From the team that invented physiology-sensing pajamas at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, now comes a new, lightweight eye mask that can unobtrusively capture pulse, eye movement …

New Green Technology from UMass Amherst Generates Electricity ‘Out of Thin Air’

“Renewable device could help mitigate climate change, power medical devices Scientists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have developed a device that uses a natural protein to create electricity from moisture in the air, a new technology they say could …

How to Capture Waste Heat Energy with Improved Polymers

“UMass Amherst chemists, electrical engineers identify new variable for material design By one official estimate, American manufacturing, transportation, residential and commercial consumers use only about 40 percent of the energy they draw on, wasting 60 percent. Very often, this wasted …

UMass Amherst Materials Scientists Create Fabric Alternative to Batteries for Wearable Devices

“A major factor holding back development of wearable biosensors for health monitoring is the lack of a lightweight, long-lasting power supply. Now scientists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst led by materials chemist Trisha L. Andrew report that they have …
