The University of Toronto (U of T or UToronto) is a public research university in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, located on the grounds that surround Queen's Park. It was founded by royal charter in 1827 as King's College, the first institution of higher learning in the colony of Upper Canada, and serves as the flagship campus of the three campuses of the University of Toronto. The other two satellite campuses are located in Scarborough (UTSC) and Mississauga (UTM). Originally controlled by the Church of England, the university assumed its present name in 1850 upon becoming a secular institution. As a collegiate university, it comprises eleven colleges each with substantial autonomy on financial and institutional affairs and significant differences in character and history.

New design enhances durability of inverted perovskite solar cells

“An international team — including U of T Engineering researchers — has developed a new technique to enhance the durability of inverted perovskite solar cells. The advancement is an important step toward commercialization of this emerging photovoltaic technology, which could significantly reduce …

Quantum innovation advances low-cost alternative solar technology

“A team of researchers from the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering has leveraged quantum mechanics to optimize the active layer within a device known as an inverted perovskite solar cell – a technology that could one day …

New metamaterial with unusual reflective property could boost your Wi-Fi signal

“Your office wall might play a part in the next generation of wireless communications. ECE researchers Professor George Eleftheriades and postdoctoral fellow Sajjad Taravati have shown how reflectors made of metamaterials can channel light to enable more wireless data to …

U of T researchers develop new quantum ‘fingerprinting’ protocol to improve information exchange

“Suppose you and your cousin are about to inherit some money and you each have a version of the will on your computer. What is the least amount of information your computers must share to determine whether the versions are …

Researchers at U of T and LG develop ‘explainable’ artificial intelligence algorithm

“Researchers from the University of Toronto and LG AI Research have developed an “explainable” artificial intelligence (XAI) algorithm that can help identify and eliminate defects in display screens. The new algorithm, which outperformed comparable approaches on industry benchmarks, was developed …

Enhanced tandem solar cells set new standard in converting light into electricity

“Researchers from U of T Engineering and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) have overcome a key obstacle in combining the emerging solar-harvesting technology of perovskites with the commercial gold standard — silicon solar cells. The result is a …

U of T researchers turn McDonald’s deep fryer oil into high-end 3D printing resin

“Researchers at the University of Toronto Scarborough have, for the first time, turned waste cooking oil – from the deep fryers of a local McDonald’s – into a high-resolution, biodegradable 3D printing resin. Using waste cooking oil for 3D printing has …

Soft robot programmed to move like an inchworm

“U of T Engineering researchers have created a miniature robot that can crawl with inchworm-like motion. The underlying technology could one day transform industries from aviation to smart wearables. Professor Hani Naguib (MIE, MSE) and his group specialize in smart …

Microrobots to change the way we work with cellular material

“In a new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers in the lab of Professor Aaron Wheeler (Chemistry, IBBME) have demonstrated a novel and non-invasive way to manipulate cells through microrobotics. Cell manipulation — which requires …

Quantum rebar: Quantum dots enhance stability of solar-harvesting perovskite crystals

“U of T Engineering researchers have combined two emerging technologies for next-generation solar power — and discovered that each one helps stabilize the other. The resulting hybrid material is a major step toward reducing the cost of solar power while multiplying …
