The University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) is a public research university in Austin, Texas. It was founded in 1883 and is the flagship institution of the University of Texas System. The University of Texas was inducted into the Association of American Universities in 1929, becoming only the third university in the American South to be elected. The institution has the nation's eighth-largest single-campus enrollment, with over 50,000 undergraduate and graduate students and over 24,000 faculty and staff. A Public Ivy, it is a major center for academic research, with research expenditures exceeding $615 million for the 2016–2017 school year. The university houses seven museums and seventeen libraries, including the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum and the Blanton Museum of Art, and operates various auxiliary research facilities, such as the J. J. Pickle Research Campus and the McDonald Observatory. Among university faculty are recipients of the Nobel Prize, Pulitzer Prize, the Wolf Prize, the Primetime Emmy Award, the Turing Award, and the National Medal of Science, as well as many other awards. As of October 2019, 12 Nobel Prize winners, two Turing Award winners and two Fields medalists have been affiliated with the school as alumni, faculty members or researchers.

Compact Accelerator Technology Achieves Major Energy Milestone

“Particle accelerators hold great potential for semiconductor applications, medical imaging and therapy, and research in materials, energy and medicine. But conventional accelerators require plenty of elbow room — kilometers — making them expensive and limiting their presence to a handful of national …

Astronomers Confirm Maisie’s Galaxy is Among Earliest Ever Observed

“Thanks to the James Webb Space Telescope, astronomers racing to find some of the earliest galaxies ever glimpsed have now confirmed that a galaxy first detected last summer is in fact among the earliest ever found. The findings are in …

Study Presents Workaround for Randomized Experiments

“A new statistical tool can help researchers get meaningful results when a randomized experiment, considered the gold standard, is not possible. Randomized experiments split participants into groups by chance, with one undergoing an intervention and the other not. But in …

Water-Purifying Cup Makes Drinkable Water From Creeks and Streams

“A rash of storms in Texas in recent years — from Hurricane Harvey in 2017 to the deep freeze in 2021 — has put big chunks of the population in danger and left millions without electricity or water for long periods. These …

James Webb Telescope Catches Glimpse of Possible First-Ever ‘Dark Stars’

“Stars beam brightly out of the darkness of space thanks to fusion, atoms melding together and releasing energy. But what if there’s another way to power a star? A team of astrophysicists including Katherine Freese at The University of …

New Material Transforms Light, Creating New Possibilities for Sensors

“A group of scientists and engineers that includes researchers from The University of Texas at Austin has created a new class of materials that can absorb low energy light and transform it into higher energy light. The new material is …

Chest E-Tattoo Boasts Major Improvements in Heart Monitoring

“A new flexible, wearable medical device could provide a major boost in the fight against heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States. A team led by researchers at The University of Texas at Austin has developed …

James Webb Space Telescope Images Challenge Theories of How Universe Evolved

“AUSTIN, Texas — The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) appears to be finding multiple galaxies that grew too massive too soon after the Big Bang, if the standard model of cosmology is to be believed. In a study published in Nature …

Anti-Dust Tech Paves Way for Self-Cleaning Surfaces

“Dust is a common fact of life, and it’s more than just a daily nuisance – it can get into machinery and equipment, causing loss of efficiency or breakdowns. Researchers at The University of Texas at Austin partnered with North …

James Webb Telescope Reveals Milky Way-like Galaxies in Young Universe

“New images from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) reveal for the first time galaxies with stellar bars — elongated features of stars stretching from the centers of galaxies into their outer disks — at a time when the universe was …
