Light It Up: uOttawa Researchers Demonstrate Practical Metal Nanostructures

“Researchers at the University of Ottawa have debunked the decade-old myth of metals being useless in photonics – the science and technology of light – with their findings, recently published in Nature Communications, expected to lead to many applications in the field …

In the blink of an eye: uOttawa team uses quantum of light to create new quantum simulator

“Imagine being stuck inside a maze and wanting to find your way out. How would you proceed? The answer is trial and error. This is how traditional computers with classical algorithms operate to find the solution to a complex problem …

Scientist’s accidental exhale leads to improved DNA detector

“Greg Madejski held his breath as he looked into the microscope, trying to weld two fingernail-sized chips together: a tiny chip containing a nanofilter on top of another chip with a DNA sensor. It was frustrating work. The chips weren …

A zero-index waveguide

“Researchers directly observe infinitely long wavelengths for the first time In 2015, researchers at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) developed the first on-chip metamaterial with a refractive index of zero, meaning that the …

High-Dimensional Quantum Encryption Performed in Real-World City Conditions for First Time

“For the first time, researchers have sent a quantum-secured message containing more than one bit of information per photon through the air above a city. The demonstration showed that it could one day be practical to use high-capacity, free-space quantum …

A 100-year-old physics problem has been solved at EPFL

“EPFL researchers have found a way around what was considered a fundamental limitation of physics for over 100 years. They were able to conceive resonant systems that can store electromagnetic waves over a long period of time while maintaining a …

A 100-year-old physics problem has been solved

“At EPFL, researchers challenge a fundamental law and discover that more electromagnetic energy can be stored in wave-guiding systems than previously thought. The discovery has implications in telecommunications. Working around the fundamental law, they conceived resonant and wave-guiding systems capable …

Protecting quantum computing networks against hacking threats

“As we saw during the 2016 US election, protecting traditional computer systems, which use zeros and ones, from hackers is not a perfect science. Now consider the complex world of quantum computing, where bits of information can simultaneously hold multiple …
