The Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), managed and operated by the National Technology and Engineering Solutions of Sandia (a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International), is one of three National Nuclear Security Administration research and development laboratories in the United States. In December 2016, it was announced that National Technology and Engineering Solutions of Sandia, under the direction of Honeywell International, would take over the management of Sandia National Laboratories starting on May 1, 2017.

Stunning discovery: Metals can heal themselves

“Scientists for the first time have witnessed pieces of metal crack, then fuse back together without any human intervention, overturning fundamental scientific theories in the process. If the newly discovered phenomenon can be harnessed, it could usher in an engineering …

New superalloy could cut carbon emissions from power plants

“As the world looks for ways to cut greenhouse gas emissions, researchers from Sandia National Laboratories have shown that a new 3D-printed superalloy could help power plants generate more electricity while producing less carbon. Sandia scientists, collaborating with researchers at …

Securing supply chains with quantum computing

“The Russo-Ukrainian conflict and the COVID-19 pandemic have shown how vulnerable global supply chains can be. International events can disrupt manufacturing, delay shipping, induce panic buying and send energy costs soaring. New research in quantum computing at Sandia National …

Through the quantum looking glass

“An ultrathin invention could make future computing, sensing and encryption technologies remarkably smaller and more powerful by helping scientists control a strange but useful phenomenon of quantum mechanics, according to new research recently published in the journal Science. Scientists at …

Sandia designs better batteries for grid-scale energy storage

“Sandia designs better batteries for grid-scale energy storage New molten sodium batteries operate at lower temperatures using low- cost materials Researchers at Sandia National Laboratories have designed a new class of molten sodium batteries for grid-scale energy storage. The new …

Automating complex 3D modeling

“A team of researchers led by Sandia National Laboratories have invented a first-of-its-kind software for scientists to create accurate digital representations of complex objects. The new software, VoroCrust, offers a novel way to create digital representations, called meshes, which are …

Friendly electromagnetic pulse improves survival for electronics

“An electromagnetic pulse, or EMP, emitted by a nuclear weapon exploded high above the United States could disable the electronic circuits of many devices vital to military defense and modern living. These could include complicated weapon systems as well as …

A Bit of Quantum Logic-What Did the Atom Say to the Quantum Dot?

“Let’s talk! Scientists demonstrate coherent coupling between a quantum dot and a donor atom in silicon, vital for moving information inside quantum computers. The Science Quantum computers could tackle problems that current supercomputers can’t. Quantum computers rely on …

Sandia’s robotic work cell conducts high-throughput testing ‘in an instant’

“Automation speeds up 3D-printed part testing, materials science data collection Today with 3D printing you can make almost anything in a matter of hours. However, making sure that part works reliably takes weeks or even months. Until now. Sandia National …

Reducing the traffic jam in batteries

“Research at Sandia National Laboratories has identified a major obstacle to advancing solid-state lithium-ion battery performance in small electronics: the flow of lithium ions across battery interfaces. Sandia’s three-year Laboratory Directed Research and Development project investigated the nanoscale chemistry …
