“For some unknown reason, the OSCCAL value sometimes gets erased during programming of the chip. Without the OSCCAL value, the PIC will not run at the optimal 4MHz. For most projects, this is not a problem. Some of my PICs uses software serial at 19200 baud, or measures PPM signals from a R/C transmitter. If the internal clock is not calibrated with the OSCCAL value, the serial data or timing is corrupted.”
